Abstract

The thermal stress from solar radiation and the unpredictability of wind comfort at the pedestrian level are two challenges for outdoor recreationareas in hot climates. This unpredictability is expressed in the fact that the wind can vary from uncomfortable air stagnation in shaded areas to abrupt wind surges around urban structures. This article examines mashrabiyas as porous covering that filters airflow, rather than obstructs it, and provides shade. The authors propose a comprehensive concept that takes into account microclimatology, wind simulation, pedestrian comfort, and wind comfort standards when designing rest areas, pathways, and recreational spaces. The paper attempts to trans-form the mashrabiya from a decorative element into a reproducible and verifiable climate performance tool, drawing on the latest scientific and experimental research on the performance of mashrabiyas in hot climates.
