Abstract

The article is devoted to the urgent problem of deep revitalization of existing old housing stock, in particular, typical Soviet-era dormitories from the 1980s, in order to adapt them to modern requirements of providing a barrier-free environment for people with limited mobility. The purpose of the study is to systematize methodological approaches to designing an accessible environment for the conversion of dormitory buildings into apartment buildings based on t a real case study. The possibility of implementing the “reasonable accommodation” principle in an existing building is demonstrated using a case study of a building in Magnitogorsk, where partial adaptation was carried out with the creation of apartments for people with limited mobility on the ground floor. The research is based on a synthesis of theoretical, empirical, and design methods with an emphasis on the analysis of available data: reconstruction drawings, pre-reconstruction survey, and architectural and design solutions. The result of this study is a demonstration of the practical implementation of the principles of universal design and reasonable accommodation in the reconstruction of a typical dormitory, as well as an analysis of specific architectural, planning, and engineering solutions aimed at creating a barrier- free environment for people with limited mobility.
