Ivan the Terrible Sticherons on the «podoben» (sample) In honor of St. Peter the Metropolitan ALL RUSSIA
Keywords:
old Russian chanting art, neumatic notation, hymnography, authorship, textual method of structural formulae analysis, the sticherons of Ivan the Terrible.Abstract
The authors first examine the chants of Ivan the Terrible — sticherons in honor
of St. Peter the Metropolitan of All Russia, in which the tsar applied to traditional
old Russian musical hymnographical art principle — to compose chants following
the sample (podoben).
The researchers conducted a study based on textual method of structural
formulae analysis, worked out by them. They argue that tsar took as a model the
ancient podoben “Kymi pokhvalnimi ventsami” (“What laudable crowns”). But
it is not only this. He used a series of hymnographical texts ascending to it. It was
above all the sticherons in honor of some Saints of the highest rank including chants
in in honor of St. Peter written earlier by Metropolitan Cyprian. The problem of
tsar authorship is disclosed. Ivan the Terrible, in fact, created new hymnographical
artworks, reflecting on the Moscow Metropolitan new role and place in the
history of the country.
