The image as the object of historical research

The paper analyzes the reasons, in which the problem of images of the past in contemporary history actualized. Retrospective method of research allows to determine the main conceptual approaches to this inquiry. There is argumentation of thesis that the interest to research of historical images was linked with the revision of general approaches and concepts during the XX century
