The article is devoted to studying the experience of the Republic of South Africa in
incorporating customary law into the country's legal system in order to identify the risks associated
with carrying out such reforms. An overview of both Russian and foreign scientific research on the
possible indigenization of law in multinational and multi-religious states is given, the historical features of the formation of the South African legal system are examined, and its judicial practice is
studied. Based on the analysis, the authors identified possible risks associated with the adoption of
reforms aimed at indigenization of law.
