Abstract

The article describes tactical and psychological techniques used in questioning prior to
line-up identification. Based on the analysis of criminal cases the investigation on which featured
such investigation activity as line-up, the author suggests different tactical and psychological
techniques used to actualize and revive the image of interest for the investigator,
which has been perceived and recorded in the memory of the questioned subject. The author’s
conclusion is that an investigator should conduct an additional questioning of the identifying
subject immediately before the line-up. During questioning it is appropriate to acquaint
the identifying subject with the descriptive portrait terminology and explain the meaning
of the terms. Such questioning is aimed at helping the prospective identifier to recall the
meaningful features and the peculiar characteristics of the object. The investigator also has a
chance to conduct psychological preparation of the identifier for the participation in the investigative
action.
