Abstract

The articles deals with non-categorical linguistic means of expression in academic
texts on history. A historian is not only a chronicler, he does not only analyze the existing historical sources and academic texts, but he is a rethinker and a reevaluater of the events of the past. He can assess one and the same historical fact from different points of view prompted by the values and ideology of his class and society. At his disposal a historian has different non-categorical linguistic means to express his attitude to the historical facts, among them are modal verbs, modal adjectives, a “rather than” construction.
