Abstract

The article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the associative potential of the lexeme carousel in the Russian linguistic consciousness. Based on the material drawn from the National Russian Corpus (more than 2,000 contexts), the study establishes and analyzes the semantic and pragmatic potential of the word, taking into account the specifics of linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The study reveals the features of modeling a fragment of the Russian linguistic worldview that includes the image of a carousel. The analysis contends that the transformations of the semantic space of the lexical unit carousel, on the one hand, demonstrate the distinctive ways the word reflects the realities of specific historical epochs, and, on the other hand, become a marker of the individual author's characteristics that the word carousel acquires in a particular context. The study demonstrates that when explicitly used in literary and journalistic texts, the word “carousel” acquires new connotative features and generates a wide range of metaphorical images that extend beyond the denotative meaning of the unit under study.
