Abstract

Meme, the most important genre of online discourse, easily crosses linguistic boundaries and expands into foreign-language segments of the Internet. Many examples of the genre become precedents that are significant for users of the entire global network (“universal” memes). At the same time, there are memes that do not go beyond the language segment in which they appeared (“national” memes). The article examines the process of interlingual diffusion of meme content in the context of the cycle of meme existence. The main problem of the work is the mutual existence of “universal” and “national” memes among users of the same language segment. The Cyrillic Internet has become the basis of empirical research. Using the focus group method, an array of the most popular memes among Russian-speaking users was selected, followed by content analysis, where the author examines the results of an empirical study based on the generally accepted classification of memes and refers to his own meme model, previously published in academic literature.
