IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INFORMATION AND INTERPRETATION STRATEGY IN THE NEW YEAR'S ADDRESSES OF THE ITALIAN PRESIDENT SERGIO MATTARELLA

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the analysis of the ritual genre of New Year's address by the head of state. The research focuses on the information and interpretation strategy, which is implemented in the New Year's addresses of the Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The authors highlight the main communication tactics typical of this strategy, namely those of acknowledging the problem, emphasizing positive information, and indicating the way to solve the problem. The use of the pragmatic approach, discourse analysis, and the method of linguistic commentary made it possible to identify and describe a set of linguistic means employed for implementing the information and interpretation strategy. The choice of the language means by the President of Italy that have been analyzed in the article were determined by the overarching goal of his New Year's address: uniting citizens to solve the identified problems, as well as maintaining national unity and civic responsibility.
