MEETING REQUEST LETTER IN A SHORT STORY: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATIONS FROM ENGLISH INTO RUSSIAN

The article deals with the functioning of the letter of request within a work of fiction. The meeting request letters under analysis serve as an opening sequence of a detective story, being written to private detectives for the sake of consultation. The above-mentioned type of letters has seldom, if ever, been a subject of investigation, much less of comparative literary translation. We have studied letters from the short stories “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and “The Dream” by Agatha Christie, as well as their translations into Russian. The study establishes the structure of the letter, reveals differences in letter composition, and determines the means of trans lation. All the translators resorted to a transformational approach and, despite occasional mistakes and inadequacies, this approach yielded good results, as far as the translations under study are concerned.References
