FUNCTIONAL APPROACH TO INTERPRETATION OF POETRY CYCLES (BASED ON A. AKHMATOVA'S COLLECTION “CHETKI”)

Abstract

The article examines external and internal cycle-forming factors identified in the works of various researchers within the framework of philological analysis of the text. The vagueness and inconsistency in the definition of the main cycle-forming factors found in literary works necessitates to assign a leading role to linguistic analysis in the classification of cycle features. The application of the method of functional analysis of lyrical text, developed by the Crimean school of functional linguistics, makes it possible to analyze poems and identify the coherence of texts within a cycle based on cross-cutting elements (semantic units united by a common semantic feature) and core elements. The dominant role in the integration of poems into cycles is played by the core elements, i.e. linguistic units that make up the semantic field of the cycle, and explicate the individual author’s conceptualization of reality. The paper high lights the characteristic external and internal features of Anna Akhmatova's lyrical cycle “Confusion” from the collection “Chetki” (Rosary).
