Abstract

The paper presents the results of a comparative study of Pulmonaria officinalis, Filipendula ulmaria, and Ginkgo biloba cell cultures as promising sources of biologically active compounds with potential geroprotective properties. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing interest in plant polyphenols and in vitro plant cell cultures as sustainable sources of natural compounds exhibiting antioxidant activity. The aim of the study was to comparatively evaluate the chemical composition, the content of biologically active compounds, and the antioxidant activity of extracts obtained from the cell cultures of the investigated plant species. Callus, suspension, and root cultures of P. officinalis, F. ulmaria, and G. biloba were used as the study objects. The qualitative and quantitative composition of biologically active compounds was determined by high-performance liq-uid chromatography (HPLC), while antioxidant activity was evaluated using a titrimetric method with potassium permanganate solution. The results demonstrated that callus cultures of P. officinalis contained the highest levels of phenolic acids, whereas callus cultures of F. ulmaria were characterized by increased accumulation of flavonoids and glycosides. In contrast, suspension cultures of G. biloba proved to be a promising source of specific terpenoids and flavonoids. A wide range of phenolic compounds was identified in the extracts, including p-coumaric, ferulic, chlorogenic, and gallic acids, as well as quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, avicularin, and spiraeoside. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in extracts of P. officinalis and F. ulmaria callus cultures, which correlated with their high content of phenolic compounds. The obtained results confirm the potential of the investi-gated plant cell cultures as biotechnological sources of biologically active compounds with geroprotective potential and may serve as a basis for the development of functional food ingredients, nutraceuticals, and preventive health products.
