Abstract

The article deals with one of the most complex phenomena of grammar – the homonymy of prepositions. The homonymy of notional parts of speech has received considerable scholarly attention, whereas the homonymy of function words, prepositions in particular, as well as the semantics and functioning of prepositions in general, requires further research. At the current stage of development of verbal communication and linguistic science, the status of the preposition as a means of organizing verbal communication in Russian is of particular relevance. With the help of prepositions, the semantic and grammatical connection of lexemes within a phrase is established. Homonymy, which is characteristic of prepositions to no lesser extent than of other parts of speech, requires contextual support for their use, since the phonetic coincidence of distinct lexemes with specific lexical and grammatical meanings does not allow for the identification of a homonymous preposition without context. Especially difficult in this situation is the use of prepositions by non-native speakers of the Russian language. Lately, due to the expansion of linguistic communication, a large number of prepositions are required to serve this function; they continue to be actively formed in the Russian language, yet only a small fraction of them has been recorded in dictionaries to date.
